How best to raise the car for a tyre change etc.

if you use a jack with a large enough saddle there will be no issue, t's only when the weight is focussed on too small an area that you get crushing problems. If you have a small saddle jack, use a piece of wood to spread the load

    Poor economy :(

FLOL, hardly. I make about £1 on a thermostat Simple fact is, if your economy suffers in cold weather from not getting up to temperature properly, then the thermostat isn't working right, and the it's a part that's rarely changed anymore. Not sure why it's disregarded, the technology involved...

Winter Checks - Dont get caught out by the cold

you're very much incorrect in the method you're suggesting. All you're testing like that is the alternator output

    Poor economy :(

have a look at my thread here viewtopic.php?f=26&t=9809 explains the effect an old/tired thermostat has. Well worth you checking the lambda sensor operation (NOT a fault code check) you should be hitting close to 40mpg, depending on driving style. less than 35 and you have an issue, unless...

Winter Checks - Dont get caught out by the cold

The drop tester applys a resistive load across the battery, similar to the kind of loads the starter motor would give for example. This allows you to see the strength of the battery rather than just a voltage.
