My Trophy has developed a subtle engine fault over the last couple of months. There is a distinct missfire at 2500 RPM (in neutral) and has become a little sluggish under acceleration, especially from lower revs. It sounds rough too. I have also noticed a rumble, in tick-over, from the cambelt pullies area of the engine. Renault don't want to know but I have been advised that the dephaser bearing may be faulty and this could impact on the engine timing. This is apparently a comon fault amoungst 182/172 engines. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem,

hmmmn, is this from cold AND when warm? Mine has a similar issue and I keep getting the fob off - letter going off today to Yann Vincent, Renault Director of Quality, the dealership manager (who are a show of shite) and Reno's MD.

Well that's very sweet of them but unfortunately for them it's a warranty covered engine and they're going to have to fix it.

Could just be a duff plug.

engine fault

The fault appears when cold and when a full operating temp. When its cold the car learches forward and there is a slight miss fire under acceleration. The exhaust smells very rich on a cold start (but no oil burn). After its warmed up is when you can hear the cam belt rumble and the engine sounds lumpy and very deep, rather than a sweet purr. But the Ren technicians are incapable of hearing anything unusual. The acceleration is definately suffering

I've ordered a new high flow air filter to replace the original, which is a little dirty. If that makes no difference I'll insist on a thorough investigation under warranty. The rumlbing noise is just not right. There is a Ren specialist in Exeter who has a very good reputation. May get him to check the plugs.

Cue...if you have any success, let me know!

yeh, this is idenical to my issue - i've just fitted an ITG panel and it's made no difference. After easter I'll get on top of this issue and post the results. Reno's MD and head of quality are aware of the issue so I expect immediate results!

Hi Simon - been lurking here a while!!

Can't offer any more advice with your engine issues unfortunately, but if you post your car number in the owners register I'll arrange for you to be equipped with a Trophy owner star! :D

Mine's still got the rumble.....having it checked out independantly by a Ren Specialist in Exmouth next week. If there is a problem with one of the pullies he'll give a written report, and I will take it up with Renault....who told me 'its supposed to sound like that' and the power lurches are normal too!? Somehow I think not......I'll keep you posted!

George,

Thats right....taking the Trophy down from Thornbury near Exmouth for his 24K service. Long drive, but Alex's reputation is very good. Much cheaper at £80 ish than the £200 quoted by City Motors in Bristol....and I'm sure the service will be much better, and we will make a weekend of it!

Alex is a fellow hill climber with a rear engined 5 turbo - brave stuff as it is an all or nothing turbo.

I live in the area if you want to pm.

George,

Will be looking forward to seeing the Ren 5!

Unfortunately we can't PM as we will be seeing some friends over the weekend......maybe we could organise a South West meet sometime in the future....
