That clio is selling for the same price as I bought mine three years ago and it has an extra 25,000 miles on the clock. I can't imagine it selling at that price but fair play to the owner. There is only a handful on sale at the moment (that I can find anyway) so if people are keeping hold of theirs atm then prices will naturally rise. I was shocked at the prices the 197 are selling at atm! Did it sell, anyone know the owner?

It didn't sell through Ebay but it's still active on Pistonheads at £6k, so I assume it's still for sale.

Interestingly there's one on Cup suspension and 71k on Ebay without a bid at £2500 although I'm sure there'll be a flurry at the end, buy it now is only £3500 though & the damaged Sachs are included.

Have to say this is pretty cool too: http://www.pistonheads.com/classifi.../top-specification-clio-cup-track-toy/1805381

£2,660 seems quite cheap in the end, despite needing a bit of work to bring up to the sort of standard people on owners' forums expect.

Hope you weren't offended by the other member's comment above, you seemed pretty honest about the faults so perhaps a little harsh.

Bet you'll be sad to see it go though :(

There's a couple more for sale at the moment at the lower end, one looks in great condition but has 140k, another without Sachs & on 89k.

Just been reading this with some interest as mine has been declared a write-off today due to a repair bill of £ 3,500 (parts £ 1,700, paint £ 500, labour £ 720 + VAT £ 580). The insurance obviously considers she's not worth that... I totally disagree!

I am waiting to hear what they come up with as settlement figure. However, I want to buy her back and get her repaired as it's mostly cosmetics except for the alternator.

She has 118k but was fully serviced and running perfectly well, never showing her age.

As you all seem to be watching prices, what would you suggest she's worth? I'd be interested to know how much the 140k went for and any other high mileage ones so I can argue with the insurance.

Many thanks, Audrey

Bad news about the decision, hopefully you can buy it back at a decent price, that seems like a sensible way to go - that or buy it back & break it.

Regarding 'value', it's so difficult to measure, but in my opinion a Trophy with 118k miles would be worth £4,000 at the most. I take it you didn't have an agreed value for the car?

I just had this with my Elise.
I complained enough that they eventually agreed with my valuation (I explained they were not going to have to pay that amount), and with my valuation the car was then financially viable to repair so no cat d.
I got the car back + agreed repair costs paid in cash. I had to sign a waiver saying if I found any more damage when the car was stripped then it was my problem and I got a letter from them saying it wasn't a write off.
The angry man at the (insurances) garage was pretty pissed off when we went to get the car off him. I think he saw his nice profit disappear. I'm convinced many cars are written off as a scam so they can sell them on for a good profit.
Anyway, got my car back from the repair shop yesterday and all is good. New, perfect front bodywork and £400 up.

Gungo - where did you take you car for repairs? One of my friends will do the work and it should cost me less than the garage's stupid estimate. I don't know if the insurance would be happy to foot my friend's bill... It would certainly cost less.

I hate insurances!!!

I was approached by a lotus specialist on a forum and he came and looked at the car with me. He showed me that there was no chassis damage and then gave me a quote to do the work.
The insurance company gave me 2 offers
1 full payout for the car.
2 repair costs and keep the car.
Full payment was negotiable but I gave up when they seemed to stop 2 grand short of the cheapest replacement car on autotrader.
Repair costs were non negotiable. Set by the insurers garage. It was their quote for repairs. I just managed to find a specialist who knows that car and quoted me less.

I don't know where your insurers repair quote comes from but it might be worth asking on this forum for specialists in your area.
Make sure you fight the value of the car.
Gather as many examples of Trophies for sale as you can to fight your case. Sounds like insurance companies like to use the value of standard 182's when offering for a Trophy.

Good luck

Thanks for that. I found 2 examples a 103k sold £ 3,750 & a 89k for £ 4,250. Wrote an email, saying estimated value on insurance policy was 4k. Listing MOT till Nov 14 & tax till Sept 14. Between May 13 & Nov 13 services, all 4 pads/discs, wheel bearings, shock absorbers, brake cable, cambelt, front tyres had been replaced. Back had plenty of thread left. Basically the car was mechanically more than sound.
I had the car from brand new, looked after her. It's a collector's car, only 500 made, not the normal 182.
Offer of £ 2,550 is a joke & I would never get a remplacement at that price.
I asked them to reconsider tha Cat C & repair her. If they still think it's a Cat C, I want her back (scrap price £ 510, 20% market value) & I'll do the repairs. The insurers' garage, like in your case, is seeing £££s to be made! The assessor has only seen pics.
She was scratched on the passenger side but that could have been fixed for £ 800.

I am disputing it obviously!

After all this, I am losing 8 of my 10 yrs NCB on the T, next yr insurance will be expensive (dreading it!). I got a quote for a potential 2nd car bought for £2,00, 2004 RS 172 0 yrs NCB £ 1,000!! I think my 2nd run around car will be a Nissan micra at this rate. Until you have an accident, you don't realise the ins n outs of insurance policies...

As far as I am aware.
A Cat d write off is not financially viable.
A cat c write off is because it is unsafe.
Not sure which yours is but not many people would touch a cat c, I'm not sure on the legality of putting it back on the road either.

my insurance company quoted me for a normal 182, and it took me 48hrs to prove to them it was a T, had to send off loads of ebay adverts and such, told them i wanted £4500 to replace it, and then they agreed to repair it..... £3200 !!! :D

Cat C & D are not dangerous they are just both seen as uneconomically repairable. Cat C needs a VIC test & Cat D an MOT.
Cat A is dangerous & needs crushing (mostly fire, water damaged), Cat B not allowed back on road but can ve sold as parts.
You can check that online easily.

Mikey, I read your thread with interest. What was the mileage on your car when it happened?

I'm hoping they will reconsider. If I can work it out, I'll add a pics of the estimate.

PS Sorry for high jacking this thread.
