Heres the write up of the detailing session my good friend Olly (Snow Shine) carried out for me. After having him work on my EK9 before and seeing the results along with his various other clients I knew the car was in safe hands. I really can't recommend him enough and if you're on the South Coast or even further afield and willing to travel to have someone who really knows and cares about what they're doing then get in touch with me and I'll forward you his contact details.

Anyway it all started with a detailed analysis of the car and to judge the condition of the vehicle and establish which areas needed the most attention. As you can see the guy who owned it before me had looked after it mechanically but aesthetically he didn't really know an awful lot and mentioned a carwash to me when I was viewing the car...

As you can see the car had an awful lot of swirls and the red paint had also faded quite a bit and was looking slightly pink.

The first step of the cleaning process was to give it a proper wash which involved Klean Freaks all wheel wheel cleaner and Klean Freaks snow foam. Once that had done its work the car was then washed off with Meguiars gold class shampoo.

Once the car was relatively clean the second step was to clay it. This was done using Dodo Juice detailing spray as a lubrication agent and Bilt Hammer clay. As you can see there was plenty of contaminant on the paintwork...

Once this was out of the way it was time to wash the car off again using Meguiars gold class shampoo.

Then the fun began, 3M 3 stage (fast cut plus followed by finesse and finally ultra fina) all administered with the Dodo Spin Doctor rotary polisher. First stage...

Results following just the fast cut plus...

As you can see the swirls were visibly reduced after just the first stage! Then onto the second...

Vast improvement on the colour and looking pretty smooth! Application of the ultra fina in action...

And the results of that work...

As you can see the paint had been properly brought back to life!! Next step was to ensure that lasted with some serious protection so first of all a coat of Autoglym SRP was added into the equation to finish off the polishing side of things which was done by hand. Then there was a paint sealant added into the equation of exactly which I've forgotten so I do apologise for that. Then it was time for wax, out came the Dodo waxes, first of all orange crush then that was swiftly followed up by a coat of Dodo supernatural! Quick picture of that in progress...

Once the whole thing had been sealed and waxed it was time to give it another wash off to get rid of the compound that had found its way into the nooks and crannies of the car and onto the plastics so it was jetted off then washed again with the Meguiars gold class shampoo. As you can see the wax was doing a cracking job...

Once that was all taken care of the car was dried down with a huge drying towel of which again I'm not 100% sure on the brand but the Dodo QD came back out to aid the drying process and ensure it wasn't smeary. That all done it was time to take care of the plastics and tyres which was done with the aid of Autoglym bumper care, Dodo tyre wax and finally Autoglym tyre shine! The glass was sorted aswell using Autoglym fastglass.

I really was over the moon, the car looked so much better and here's the evidence to prove it. I also gained myself a Snow Shine sticker too which isn't so shabby!

And a week on even after a drop of rain etc the cars still looking pretty much as it did the day it was done!

Me too but thankfully I don't have to seeing as I can get it done when its required which if done right and then looked after, isn't very often at all!

Looking good and I'm not trying to burst your bubble but some odd things going on there, no taping up and why a decent wax over a not so good one??????

Taping up is unecessary if you're confident and careful with the machine. The compounds were easily washed off the plastics so its really just a placebo of sorts used by high end "detailers" to pad out the time they spend on a clients car and cover their backs in the event something did go wrong.

As for the wax this is a technique that he uses sucessfully, first layer to get more depth and shine from the paint and second for added protection.

Well clearly I would debate both of those explanations as there would be no reason to bring them up but if you're happy fair enough.

No please explain its information I can happily pass on to him and lets be honest if everyone worked the same way there wouldn't ever be any progress made on techniques and such.

Hi,
good results and the colour looks nice. I do however agree with hoolio, tape is a must for numorous reasons and why would you start with fast cut plus. This is the most agreesive compound, start with the least agressive pad/compound and work up untill you get the level of correction you desire. By doing this you take of less microns of paint/clear coat. SRP then a paint sealant then wax?
Good results though so all is good. This is not negative just constructive(hopefully)

Like I said before tape is something that people choose to use I certainly wouldn't say its an absolute essential and in this case I feel I prove my point as the plastics on the car are fine with no staining as the car was washed afterwards and any excess compound removed from them.

As for the reason to starting on fast cut plus and working down well the car was not only very swirly but the paint had oxidized quite heavily so it was always going to be needed and there's no point working up the grades just to work back down.

As stated if your confident with your machine and ability taping up isn't necessary. There are many professionals out there who are doing Ferrari after Ferrari and they don't tape up. There are always those that know better online.....

You're right Elliott, there are a lot of online experts with over active fingers.

Slight dig there hoolio? Out of interest are the people who commented about the techniques used detailer/valters by trade of just as a hobby?

Absolutely. There were more than a couple of things from the pics and explanation that I thought were "odd" I didn't really want to get into a discussion about it as everyone is going to do stuff slightly differently and you seemed really happy with the results so I felt and said "fair enough"
Moono16 had stated his opinion and than came back and restated the same thing but with that little extra un necessary rider.

Shame you didn't answer my question in its entirety there. The thing you must understand is everyone hasn't merely read a few guides on the internet and picked up a rotary and called themselves a detailer. There are people out there who aren't paying attention to what the internet has to say and have picked up techniques whilst practicing in the trade.

Both waxes will only last as long as the first one, as this is the one that is bonded to the paint.

I'd tape up to stop the polish breakdown getting into shuts more than anything.

Glad you're pleased with the results.

I too have a few concerns about the method though;
- tape, already discussed
- going straight in with fast cut, necessary?
- claying without tar or iron decontamination. That's probably half the reason he went in with such an aggressive compound?
- mixture of waxes, don't see the point. Should've just gone with 2x SN
