Sorry guys, but I've just got a Trophy and it seems to want to cut out all the time.

Also takes a tad long to start up in the morning, turns over a couple of seconds longer than I'd think normal.

Even once warmed up after a long drive, put it in reverse and start to move back and it'll just cut out.

Any Ideas? It doesn't actually seem that fast either, I have just come from an M3 but I was expecting to leave a two up 106 Gti for dead but didn't.... Confused.

Erm, well I stall mine on a regular basis in reverse, simply never give it enough beans. I suspect it will actually be a lot slower than an M3 I got my butt kicked all over the place by one a while back, the power/speed thing is not what the T is about at all which brings us to the 106, good little cars with the same ethos as the T but the extra power should have told. Very difficult to answer your query really.

Interesting about the lack of pace. I came to the Trophy from an Evo VI Tommi and MINI Cooper S and I have to say, I don't find it that quick either. I know that is not what it is ultimately about but still, when you read the reviews (EVO in particular) on the car, you'd think it would chase down the M3s of this world on the right road.
Mine's only mid-teens on mileage and wonder (hope?) whether it will loosen up a bit over time.

I suspect there may be a technique issue here in that the previous cars above were modern turbos so very torquey and driveable. Don't you need to wring the T's neck to get to the power?
Of course many hot hatches (particularly older ones) are tweaked, chipped etc. and the 106 is a lighter car too. Who knows?

Hi Anthony,

There are loads of things that could be wrong.

Not Starting In The Morning
when was the last time you had your spark plugs changed?... you may need new spark plugs or maybe new ingnition leads with a new coil pack! what kind of weather is it struggling to start in?

Cutting Out While Reversing
This could be because your just bringing the clutch up with no revs to help it start moving. or you should check your (MAF - Mass Air Flow Sensor/ Idle control valve) this is common in cutting out cars when reversing, going around corners/ roundabouts and sitting at traffic lights. or it might be an air leak not really sure if it will be but everythings possible. tbh you should just give your car a real good look over check everything is topped up e.g - water, oil, coolant and listen for any bizzare noises/ sounds comin from the engine bay.

Not That Fast!
I find this funny because i thought the exact same thing even though i came from a MG ZR lol i think when you come to a race try not rip the car to the shift light unitl you hit 3rd gear. Because i feel like when you rip it in 1st and 2nd until the shift light comes on, after about 5500 revs on both gears it seems like its lagging. However if you cant find anything wrong and your still worried go to a renault dealer or a french car specialist and just ask!

the plugs shouldn't need changing - they last into 70k quite easily, one of the best things in the engine bay to be honest.

my guess would be air flow related... maybe clean the throttle body?

Just had it back from the dealer.

I must say I chose a Renault hoping to have a slightly cheaper life... However lol! Failed MOT on rear brake pads and oxygen sensor in the exhaust.

Full bill came to £336 :(

but they did fix my radio code problem free of charge so I suppose that saved me £25, and they did wash it which is more than BMW did when I sepnt £2500 on that!

Hopefully no more bills for a while now.

It feels much better to drive now, a lot smoother at least. Still not that fast, but tbh, fast = fuel = ££££ which is why I got rid of the M3. I do however like the way it goes round roundabouts.

Still a tad shocked by rear pads + fitting @ £110 and £166 for oxygen sensor but hey ho. Good job I got a load of overtime last month!

Cheers

Anthony
