My brother is a designer in the car industry with a fairly good CV (Ford, Ford's, Hyundai's and Suzuki's rally team), who's now working for Quaife (who make limited slip diffs and gearboxes etc. in case you don't know the name).

Perusing his product catalogue which he brought down over xmas I saw:

Diff for Renault Clio 182

Only £865.00 :!:

According to him, it'd be a great idea IF you use it on good quality roads/tracks, rather than sh1tty Dorset lanes.....

Does anyone know if anyone's ever put one in?

Iirc Fred @ Yozzasport supplied a few LSD's to some European customers & had good reports.

After owning a FWD with LSD as my previous car, I'd be very interested to see someone fit one & report

I also work in the transmission industry and would be cautious about the Quaife - even Ford eventualy admitted that it was too aggressive on the Focus RS - suspect that it is to do with the gear angles. Probably OK for smooth tracks. Also do not understand why it is much more expensive than the other Quaife ATB. On the hills a very quick modern Cooper S (250 bhp approx) uses one and gets good results.

Alfa are now using a Torsen diff, similar to the Quaife, but more apparently progressive. Torsens generally need both wheels to have at least minimal traction to work, which on tight and twisty roads might not be the case.

We would prefer a viscous diff, or even a combination of plates and viscous - the problem is finding anything that will fit in the standard housing.

Renault for the Megane have used a GKN diff, which is highly praised, but don't know whether it has been tried on real life UK roads - keep reading different magazines which all seem to have different descriptions.

Yozzasport is plate type .

Drexler in Germany do something - again not sure of the spec.

We are going to try to get hold of a standard diff and drawings to see what the options are - don't even ask how much - it would not be viable commercially.

So long as I continue to enjoy hill climbing this will be my research project for 2007 - will report when I have anything useful to say.

I didn't even realise one diff was different to another, I thought they all worked on the same principal. You learn something everyday....
