I appreciate that this is a Trophy board and most of you guys got that funky Sachs stuff going on.

Just bought a 172 last week and loving it, apart from the mech gremlins.

Gearbox 2nd gear synchro issue, t/belts etc

Anyway.....

Under hard acceleration, say from 2nd to 3rd, i hear something hitting the underside of the car. Now i know the mounts are a common fault in this car and that this is prolly the mani hitting the car due to engine movement so can someone tell me which one of the million mounts would be likely to be causing this so i can replace it, dont fancy replacing them all just yet. Maybe one or a couple.

Next up, i do get a bit of suspension knock from the front when cornering hard, now I have a couple of track rod ends coming but i had also heard that there was an issue where the strut was supposed to hit the strut tower or something and there was an easy fix for this, does anyone know about that and if so, can you provide some information?

I have a bitch of a clutch pedal, now I understand the pedal was supposed to be heavy (which it is) and i have no problem with that. But depressing the pedal is really sort of notchy, almost as if the cable was sticky or the pedal bushing were gaunching......is that an issue anyone has noted before?

The biggie, 2nd gear synchro. :( Well ,i knew it was borked and i am hoping to have a go at this myself in the winter. I understand that dropping the subframe is THE way to get the box out and was wondering has anyone here done this before and are there any guides to do so? Also, are there any gearbox rebuild guides?
Finally, as im getting on in years ;) im not up for the whole induction kit thing. The car is quite snorty as it is but id like a wee touch more intake noise. Anyone using a K&N in box element with positive results here or should i just as well stick with the stock?

Cheers

Hi Andy,

Firstly welcome to the forum. I don't know if you're using www.cliosport.net but that is really focused on the mk2 RS range and I think you'd deffo get a fair bit of help.

I've had a 172 myself as well but not really had too many of the problems you've got but I'll try my best with respect to help:

1. Engine mounts are usually the lower engine and dog bone mounts which need replacing.

2. Could be anything. Without looking it's really hard to say.

3. I don't think the clutch cable is routed correctly. This complaint happens on the RS range. Get a genuine clutch cable too, always alot smoother that replacments.

4. Not worth rebuilding the box. Get one off someone breaking a 172. Loads of cars get broken on Cliosport. Fitting, have never done this but can't imagine it being easy.

5. Air filters don't add much power but can adjust the noise. Something with a cold air feed would be best.

Hey,

Thanks for the update.

The notion of a second hand box doesnt excite me tbh....id near rather put a bit of time in to make sure mine's ok.

Better the devil you know sometimes.....the car is a relatively low mile example 48K car and every gear is sweet apart from super high speed 2nd gear shifts.

On strike engine, the mention "Full lock can cause knocking as the shock nut catches the turret top, this can be easily modified if required"

Does anyone know about this or how to do it?

Cheers

Tbh, I haven't heard of too many people complaining about the boxes. Sure some go but not a common complaint. I'd get the new clutch cable first. Wouldn't suprise me if it was disengaging correctly would coluld cause crunchs. It's a monumnetal effot to fuck a box on 48k. Must be thrashing that everywhere. I don't think a 2nd box would be too much of a worry....

With the suspension, sometimes when on full lock you can get noise from the top mounts aii. They don't fit amazingly so can get a bit of rocking... However this shouldn't be happening at speed or under alot of load. However, if they are fucked it could be the case.

Where are you located? There are a few decent traders and RS specialists about. Midlands it's BTM. NW and it's Birchdown.
