I've just bought these from SGS - but can't get the metal ball socket to fit even though I've removed the retaining pin.

I have pushed it pretty hard, but does it need a hammer!!

Any thoughts?

well, you know the oem one, when you push it on you can feel it push on to the nipple, with these ones it sits on it, but does not come off with out a good tug

thanks for the photo - i cant quite see how far around the nipple it goes... 3/4 of the way around?

did you push with your hand or something stronger?

did you put some grease in the socket?

Trophy No.
211
Thanks to all who found SGS and the recommendations. Trophy 211 now has a boot lid that stays up and don't keep smacking me on the barnet...
highly recommend SGS part number GSC1123 BMW 1 Series bonnet gas strut. next day delivery fitted in quick time no problems.

Best sticking with SGS if I was you

Any particular reason?

Just fitted them and they are spot on. They also don't have the horrible aluminium bit that the SGS ones have, far more OEM in appearance and all for £21 delivered! I originally meant Marelli not Hella...damn logo is so similar!

IMO sgs struts are made for the Trophy not a BMW 1 Series.

As you can see from mine that they are perfect and don't come with aluminium part which you have spoke about.

The time has come to replace mine. Think I'm leaning towards the Marelli ones. Can someone let me know where to order these?

I've now fitted these. They are a little longer than the OEM items I removed, but this doesn't cause any issues with the spoiler. In fact the extra clearance is probably a good thing.

Interesting that the OEM Stabilus lift-o-mat items which I removed are also on the Mercedes, although a different length.

Thanks to all for your help.

I think they seem a little longer as they are new thats all, its a mm or two at the most. Which could easily be lost over the life of the original struts.
