O turns it off
+ (set's at the current speed if its still switched off), then increases it with each press once engaged
- reduces the speed with each press once engaged

Strangely though, with 6 gears, the 197 revs very high in 6th gear at 70 mph, about 4000-4500 IRC.
Made for noisy motorway cruising.
Later models had new ratios which fixed this.
