Hi folks,

A little moment of your time if you please.

As many of us here know, this forum has a really useful Owners' Register section. Each 182 Trophy is listed by number and owners and enthusiasts alike are able to update each car's 'history' by adding appropriate content to the associated thread. Some folks use this as a place to maintain a project thread (like myself), whilst others may simply wish to check prior history [for a specific Trophy] by having a read through the relevant thread. However that section is used it has proven to be a useful feature regardless.

Over recent months a few posts have appeared on the forum that has resulted in the sharing of potentially useful data - for example, the mileage thread and the thread asking where folks' Trophys are located (by county or principal area).

For fun, I did collate this into a simple data package which I exposed on my website for folks to view. I have shared this link elsewhere before and will present it again in a moment.

As a result of these threads I wondered if it might be a good idea to store and maintain this data so that folks could access it (in addition to the excellent Owners' Register present here). Clearly I wasn't the only person thinking along those lines as @dablk also shared the same thoughts. Consequently we were potentially looking to collaborate on a little project whereby we collate and cross-reference the information we already have and then stick it in a database so that interested folks can access it. It would not replace what is here but, instead, provide additional data such as last known mileage, locality (e.g. country and county), registration date and so forth. We could also potentially show original / current licence plate if folks wanted to share that.

So - I guess the question is... would anyone be interested in such a feature?

It's not necessarily meant to provide the latest and greatest information about a specific Trophy, nor is it guaranteed to be completely up to date. After all, there's no easy way of ensuring it stays absolutely current as it very much depends on what information people are prepared to share and/or what information can be drawn from public postings, etc. (such as for sale ads perhaps).

The database would be hosted on my secure website and only I have access to it. The plan would be that Chris (dablk) and I take the responsibility for handling the data we are provided with (or have available) but I'm solely responsible for the database admin. There would be no public-facing mechanism for data to be entered, or tampered with, and data would be presented via an appropriate web page. In no way would any data be collected that identifies a specific individual or that may be too sensitive.

It's important to re-iterate that this feature would not replace the Owners' Register nor would it be as comprehensive and feature-rich as the excellent Vehicle Smart. It's design would be to purely show a few bits of key information that Trophy owners and enthusiasts may be interested in. Nothing more, nothing less. In essence, an extension to the Register.

To see the sort of thing I'm rambling on about you can check out the Trophy Tracker page on my website. I've linked to it before and it shows the sort of thing I'm on about. If you follow the link below and type in my Trophy number 165 (or registration if you know it) then it should pull up some information about my Trophy. Likewise, clicking the Location option will allow you to see the current results from the thread asking folks to reply with the location of their Trophy.

Please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions, ideas, concerns, etc.

Many thanks,
Andy and Chris

The nitty gritty,

Is number plates and associate trophies.

So they postings/sale adverts/photos etc it’s possible to form a picture of original number plates and sometimes new ones.

Once a plate is identified. An MOT history can be found. This gives a good idea on current mileage.

Now a number plate is a public display item. So for any car in the street you can immediately see.. mot history/tax situation and insurance. For free off the gov website.
If you pay more or are in the trade you can also see Insurance flags etc.

Now we’re not suggesting ever identifying a home address of a car.

The one bit of data which I think is for debat is associating a plate with a trophy build number. The problem being that a previous owner my have posted a thousand pics of the car and the plate. A new owner may not wish to have any.

So how do folk feel about collating information, that’s currently freely available thru internet searching. Even if current or future owners may not wish it to be so readily available.

Just a couple of thoughts.
I guess you have been looking at this with the new GDPR rules in mind. (not sure how it may be applied here)
Duplicate numbers. This doesn't seem to have reared it's ugly head for a while and when it happened to me was a result of a malicious member.
It is fairly obvious that car numbers are seat specific not car specific and there have been instances where cars have been written off only to reappear at a later date. A register linking No. and Reg. will throw this up but will cause agro as it will seen to blight a car.

Sorry that should be, a malicious act by a member, the brain is sometimes still a little quicker than the fingers.

What happens if an owner does not wish for there info to be put on the forums / website regarding them or the location of the car / car info ?
Surly it should only be accepted if the current owner agrees to the info being put online and not people hunting things like Ebay, Piston Heads or anything else.

Like its been said with the new GDPR rules coming in it might get tough and also putting a lot of this info that is made very public might act as a register for people to clone a car, steal parts from a car or even the car itself.

The only reason I mention this is I had a limited edition Vectra SuperTouring (All Vectra ST's Where The Same) and someone used my number plate on another down south for a large amount of crime.

Totally agree @MarcB , which is why we raised the discussion. However there is then the problem of should the whole register should be wiped at a current an owners request? Every online photo posted of a car?

I was surprised logging on to the gov website and as you have experienced. I could if I was dishonest, grab a number plate off any trophy. And immediately check if that car was mot’ed, taxed and (this was the new bit) currently insured. Set of fake plates and I’m cruising.

Any welsh weekender photo, or a 2 second google. My own car updates or your own pics be, it your own car or others you have posted. Any trophy plate is easy to find these days.

I understand what you are saying but surly without singing up and agreeing to terms and conditions of DATA being held its a bit of a catch 22 situation.
Even like joining a public forum you must tick the terms and conditions on that before joining.

I have been very careful in putting pictures of my car online with number and & reg along with exact location.

Uk, Scotland, West Lothian , Edinburgh are big places so therefore not likely for someone to go looking, On the other hand if it was a small village or very small Town a car could easily be targeted by thief's.

Im only going my personal option as asked and thats to say that I certainly would not like data of my car to be held on the forum.

The good and the bad of having limited edition numbered models. Without anyone posting anything ever, there is always a bread crumb trail.

Yes, in your own case I was surprised to see your new reg online. As from your posted you have always been very good at editing your photos.

The bottom line was Andy and I knew the idea would never get off the ground but also found the debat would be an interesting one hence Andy starting the thread. As unlike a random Ford Mondeo. These cars have never been more traceable.

Chris, to be honest I personally don't have much of a problem considering that much of the information is available with a bit of digging. I can see why people might have a problem with information kept outside the site though the Williams register is an example of how it could work.
I think more could be done within the forum with what we have.
