I see engines all the time on the facebook clio sport group ranging from as low as £50 with circa 80k miles to around £200 with about 80k miles. food for thought as the belts can all be done and the engine given a refresh befor going in. i can imagine fitting the engine would cost much more than doing a cambelt, both require the front end off.

I’ve tried staying off this as I’m that upset. Thanks for the support though I appreciate it. I have decided to sorn the car and cancel my insurance. The oil level was fine and coolant level was fine, in fact the car was pulling great etc and under the previous owner had just completed a trip back from Holland! It dropped a valve at 50mph in fifth gear which in turn I believe has punctured the engine block. I do think at this moment I will sell it as a complete car just minus an engine but the engine can go with it in bits, but I need to do some workings out to which is best. My main problem is I haven’t bonded with the car yet and chucking money at it makes me ill. Phil if you PM me what you’re thinking and we can go from there. The car in question is in the advertised section as I’ve not long bought it the reg number is FY55 WZH, cheers.

Same problem as mine had then - random valve drop is unfortunately possible no matter how well the engine's been looked after, cause probably tappet failure. For the valve to cause bottom end damage is not something I've seen on the F engines before. Worst I ever saw was a piston not coming up as high (after cambelt failure) which meant a bent con rod. Hope whoever you had look at it has actually seen what's happened, but hole in block would be easy to see no doubt.
Just saying all this in case there's a chance it's not so bad & has been correctly diagnosed - I have seen plenty of cars come in & checked by breakdown co's only to find it's not what they say has happened - pretty sure I have a new spare inlet valve willing to donate to save you a pack of 8.
